What We Believe 2017-01-19T10:39:47+00:00

Somerset Bible Baptist Church is a Bible-believing church. We believe it is important to uphold Biblical traits that help clarify what kind of church we are.

Bibliology

We believe the Bible is inerrant in the original writings and is the complete, inspired, written revelation of God. We believe it is preserved for us today, as well as for all future people, and is the final authority for man’s faith and practice in life. We believe the Authorized Version, 1611 (Kings James Bible) is God’s word without error in the English language.

The Bible is:

Christology

We believe that Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God; that He was pre-existent, eternal, and God Himself. We further believe that He was born of the virgin, Mary; was truly man as well as God (the God-man), and lived a perfectly sinless life

Jesus Christ is:

  • Diety John 5:18, 10:30; Philippians 2:5,6; Colossians 1:15-17; John 1:1; Isaiah 9:6; I Timothy 3:16
  • Human John 1:14; Galatians 4:4; I Timothy 3:16; Hebrews 2:14-17

  • Eternal Exodus 3:14; I John 1:1-2; John 1:1
  • Has the attributes of God John 1:4, 5:26; Colossians 1:17

  • Only Savior John 14:6; Acts 4:12
  • Preeminent in all things Colossians 1:18
  • Head of the church Col. 1:18
  • Only Mediator I Timothy 2:5

  • As Coming King — will save us from the presence of sin Revelation 19:11-16; John 14:3

Pneumatology

We believe the Holy Spirit is God and He indwells each believer at the time of salvation

The Holy Spirit:

  • Is God Acts 5:3-4
  • Has attributes of God I Corinthians 2:11-12
  • Performs the works of God Job 26:13, 33:4; Luke 1:35; II Peter 1:21
  • Is a person Ephesians 4:30; John 16:13
  • Has power Luke 4:14
  • Reproves and convicts John 16:8
  • Regenerates believers John 3:37
  • Indwells believers Romans 8:9; I Cor. 6:19,20; John 14:17; II Timothy 1:14
  • Seals every believer Ephesians 1:13, 4:30
  • Teaches and guides the believer John 14:26; Romans 8:14
  • Baptizes every believer I Corinthians 12:12-13
  • Intercedes for believers Romans 8:26-27
  • Fills the believer Ephesians 5:18; Acts 2:4
  • Produces fruit in the believer Galatians 5:22-23
  • Gives gifts to the believer I Corinthians 12:13,14; Romans 12
  • Glorifies Jesus Christ John 16:14
  • Moved and guided men to write the scriptures II Peter 1:21
  • We believe the modern charismatic movement, with its emphasis on tongues and the Holy Spirit, is unscriptural. Because tongues are for a sign (I Corinthians 14:22) and Jews require a sign (I Corinthians 1:22) and we are not Jews (Galatians 3:28), we believe signs are not in effect at this present time. John 16:13, 14; I Corinthians 14:27-40

Soteriology

We believe that Jesus Christ died for the sins of all men and that whosoever will, may be saved. His blood sacrifice satisfied the righteous demands of God.
In order for a man to be saved from sin, he must: a) realize he is a sinner, b) repent of his sin c) by faith accept the Lord Jesus Christ as his own personal Savior. When a person is saved, he has eternal life and need not fear death and hell.

  • Salvation John 3:17; Ephesians 2:8,9; Romans 10:9,10
  • Christ’s shed blood is payment in full for sin Hebrews 9:12-14,22; I Peter 1:18,19; I John 1:7; Acts 20:28
  • Redemption: Christ bought us out of the market place of sin Romans 3:24; I Peter 1:18-19
  • Reconciliation: Christ’s death enabled man to be brought back into fellowship with God Romans 5:10; II Corinthians 5:18-20
  • Justification: The sinner who trusts Christ is now declared righteous by God Romans 5:1, 3:28
  • Propitiation: Jesus’ blood satisfied God Romans 3:25; I John 2:2
  • Regeneration: Upon being born again, the believer is changed by the Holy Spirit’s transforming power from spiritual death to spiritual life John 3:3-7, 5:24; Titus 3:5
  • Substitution: Christ died in the sinner’s place II Corinthians 5:21
  • Adoption: means placing as a son. At the new birth, the believer received the position as an adult son of God Galatians 4
  • Security: A believer cannot lose his salvation John 10:28,29; I John 5:13; John 3:16; I Peter 1:3-5
  • Sanctification: To set apart for God Romans 12:1-2; II Corinthians 6:17,18, John 17:17
